Things in Scots: Running the Asset Edition – Gie’s

After yesterday’s mammoth writing session, I was contemplating writing this post tomorrow to give my poor hands a break. But, I had a quick look through what I was writing over the last week, and today’s word jumped out at me.

Here’s the snippet… (unedited first draft)

Each bend along the long mountain road to Trevor’s mansion revealed yet another armed man patrolling the hillside. Elle dug her fingers into either side of the seat. She’d been prepared for the security cameras dotting the winding road but not the possibility of being shot en route.

Adam seemed unaffected by the men’s presence as he drove at a leisurely pace. He pried one of her hands free from its death grip on the foam and leather and placed a soft kiss on the back of her hand. “Breathe.” A breathtaking smile curved his lips. “Gie’s a smile, doll. The cameras are there for a reason.”

He was right. Trevor would have someone, a team of someones, monitoring the screens looking for the slightest microexpression that hinted that someone was a threat.

Running the Asset (Deniable Unit )

I’ve got my fingers crossed that the snippet made it clear that gie’s means give me.

Super quick explainer: gie’s is the contraction of the words gie and us. Gie means give, and us means me. [Us has multiple spellings and can mean us, we, and me.]

That’s it for this week

I hope you enjoyed this post. I’d love to hear your comments on how easy or difficult it was to get the gist of gie’s as it appeared in the quote.

  1. Easy! Almost the same the Scouse contraction ‘Gis’ – as in “Gis a job” (most famously in the TV drama, ‘Boys from the Blackstuff’).

Ah, that’s a bit before my time. I was 3 y/o. I don’t know if they showed it up here. It’s not a show I heard my parents mention.

      2. Probably a bit niche being set in Liverpool (you make me feel so old suddenly).
