Things in Scots #9: Swither

Welcome to day nine of Things in Scots!—a fun collaboration with my husband, Jez (Mind an gie Jez’s post a keek.)

With the tens of thousands of words in the Scots Leid—maist o which flee aboot ma heid oft mixed wi Inglis—it’s not surprising that I get a wee bit confused.

At least once a week, I have to ask Jez if a word is English or not. It’s only Monday, and by 5 am, I’d already asked that question. With the answer being “nope”—and the fact I use it so often—I’ve decided to share it.

Today’s Things in Scots is: Swither.

Swither (swidder in the North East) means that you’re unsure, hesitant, indecisive.

It also describes states of being: doubtful, confused, panicky.

Ach, Ah’m switherin whither tae git e bus in tae toon or jist git wur messages here.

I can’t decide if I should get a bus into the city or if I should just get my grocery shopping here.

If you want to ken the Scots for anything, just ask in the comments section.

Thenks fur stoapin by, and hae a wunnerfu day.

That reading was marvelous! I could listen to you talk all day!
