Author Journal 8th – 14th July 2021

If you’ve seen my word count updates over the last week, you’ll know that I’ve been making progress towards my writing goals. Here’s a wee keek at how it went.

Review 1st – 7th July 2021

My Writing Goals for Last Week

Did I Achieve My Goal?

Yip! I hit 5422 new words that stuck, taking the manuscript total to 6,920 words.

How Did It Go?

It was tough getting started again after a couple of days off, but I discovered a trick.

Writers often joke that PJs are our uniform. Personally, I can’t wear them during the day; it’s just one of those things that I can’t do. But, given that I was struggling, I rationalised.

I only wear PJ bottoms at the end of the day when we’re chilling out, and all is calm. So, if I were to wear them for work—not loafing—I’d be imbued with that chill and calm.

It worked. The fear and tension just disappeared as soon as I sat down to work with them on.

The Writing

There were some good days, some not so good (high CRPS pain days), and one day where the words just flowed like warm chocolate sauce from the centre of those lava-esque desserts. I’m going to work towards more of those lava days this week.

This Week’s Goal

  • Add 5000 words for Running The Asset (hit 11,920 words total)

Schedule

ThursdayDay off
FridayWrite 1000 words
SaturdayWrite 1000 words
SundayWrite 1000 words
MondayWrite 1000 words
TuesdayDay off
WednesdayWrite 1000 words

Do you work from home? Do you have a set uniform that gets you into the right mindset? I’m still floored that the PJs work for drafting. I tried them for outlining and got nowhere. Seems outlining can only be done in a big flowy skirt for me.

Anyway, that’s it for today. (Today’s word count is here.) Thanks for stopping by, and take care.

PJs? Oh yes! Takes me back to the early days of homeworking c. 1990s. Back in the day when a laptop had less memory than a memory stick and there was no such thing as broadband. It would take 20 mins for the email to ‘warm up’. I used to get up, throw on my dressing gown, open the laptop, then go brush my teeth, make coffee etc and then come back and start work. Sometimes I’d still be in my dressing gown at 11am. Lucky there was no such thing as Zoom then!
A huge well done on your progress, Susan. I’m impressed!

      Thank you!
You were far braver than me in the 90s. Before I joined the Navy at the backend of the decade, I bought an ancient BBC computer with a daisy something printer and thought I was cutting edge–no internet at all, I hadn’t even heard of it. By the time I got a “real” PC (’97) and hooked it up to the phoneline I was laughed at for thinking the computer could make calls. I was so lacking in tech knowledge that I was terrified that I might break the internet by pressing ESC ???? Email? God, no that was way out of my league until 2003.

We had no choice – thrown out of the office as a cost saving! I remember Cliff coming home to find me crying in the corner of the spare bedroom that was my office. Something had gone wrong with the printer and it just kept spewing out page after page. He cleverly pulled out the plug in response to my pleas of ‘make it stop!’ ?

The “I only wear PJ bottoms at the end of the day when we’re chilling out” must give Jez a thrill ??
