Things in Scots: Running the Asset Edition – Gadgie

Welcome to the revamped Things in Scots series. In this incarnation of TiS, I’m sharing the Scots language found in my upcoming romantic suspense novel, Running the Asset.

This week’s TiS word is one of my favourites.

Here’s the snippet… (unedited first draft)

By the time Adam reached Elle’s table, she was biting her nails. He took the seat next to her and grabbed a slab of bread. “Pass the butter.”

She snapped her head in his direction, “Oh, god, why are you here? Did you see a sliver of privacy in my life that you hadn’t invaded? Or have you decided to become my personal stalker?” She tossed her napkin on the table, readying herself to leave.

Adam moved so fast she couldn’t react, gripping her wrist tight. “Smile, doll, or that gadgie over there’ll know you’re up to something.”

She was smart enough to not look straight at the man, but the tension running through her told him she’d spotted her shadow. “That’s Bryce. I work with him.”

“He’s been following you since you left work.”

“And you know this how…? Ah, yes, because you’ve been doing the same thing.” She smiled sweetly. “Creep.” Her gaze strayed toward Bryce, and her smile faltered.

Hopefully, Adam’s narration hinted that gadgie means man/guy.

And that’s it

I hope you enjoyed this post. I’d love to hear your comments on how easy or difficult it was to get the gist of gadgie as it appeared in the quote.

If you find yourself inspired by the Scots words I share, add the tag or #ThingsinScots to your writing/art/photo post and drop your link in the comments.

If you want to see more Scots posts, check out the original series, Things in Scots.

Thanks for reading. Take care, and I hope to see you next week for more Scots on Manuscript Mondays!

Not a word I’ve heard, Susan, but I get the sense from the next sentence. Have you thought about compiling a glossary for your novel? I only ask because I’ve done it for my set in South Africa book (soon to be books) and it was welcomed by some readers.

      Thanks for the feedback, Chris!
Yes, I was planning on doing a glossary in the back but hadn’t heard of anyone else doing it–read: hadn’t looked yet. But now you’ve done that bit of research for me! Lazy me is forever grateful and sends you internet Death by Black Forest Gauteaux Chocolate cake (I wish that was real!) ?

Thank you kindly on both counts, Susan! ??

  2. Judy

Wondered if there were more to the meaning, like a creep. 🙂

No, just the basic meaning. Thanks for the feedback, Judy!

I thought man/person but maybe it was something else. I’ll give me 5/10. At least she wasn’t too scunnered ?

You were 10/10! My eejit brain messed up. I should have said that in the context of the snippet he meant it as man. Just rechecked the line (I remembered an earlier version of the post that said it meant man or boy, but I changed it before publishing it to what’s there now.) So, you were 100% correct!
