Ever wondered what an independent Scotland might look like? In my Deniable Unit series, I’ve brought this dream to life, creating a world where Scotland stands strong and proud on its own. ????????
Why an Independent Scotland?
Scotland becoming independent has always fascinated me, not only as a personal dream but as a rich backdrop for storytelling. Setting my series in an independent Scotland allows me to explore a whole new world. Scottish culture, politics, and heroism create a unique narrative you won’t find in typical UK or US spy stories.
The Birth of the Deniable Unit
After a newly independent Scotland emerged from the UK, an old, clandestine group resurfaced. Created as an elite unit in The League of Nations, this mysterious group was known as the Deniable Unit. It was revitalised by Scotland’s new defence minister and headquartered in Dundee. Imagine a place with underground vaults, cutting-edge tech, and a treasure trove of archived missions spanning a century.
Scottish Heroes at the Forefront
The series centres on highly trained Scottish operatives who tackle the world’s darkest threat: The Consortium. The Consortium is a shadowy organisation whose agents have infiltrated governments and positions of power worldwide.
These heroes are skilled, courageous, and have a guid Scots tongue in their heads. Also, they bring a unique flair to the world of espionage, offering readers a fresh and exhilarating experience.
Creating a Non-Political Narrative
I won’t pretend that the setting isn’t politically charged. But my aim is to keep the narrative focused on the action-adventure and romantic aspects of the spy genre. Here’s how I’m doing that balancing act:
- Focus on Characters and Story: The core of the series is the characters and their stories. Their personal battles, romances, and adventures take centre stage. The political backdrop only serves as a setting–as in it’s just an independent country doing its spy thing.
- Avoiding Political Commentary: The narrative avoids real-world political debates. Obviously. Instead, each story in the series is about achieving justice… Okay, it’s brutal justice, but if you’re going to be a bad guy in this series, you’re not going to have a nice death ?
- Respect for All Nations: The series respects all nationalities and backgrounds. Just like the drive for independence is about self-determination rather than animosity towards others.
Why You’ll Love This Series
This series is for you if you’re a fan of romantic suspense and action-adventure. Expect sizzling-hot romance that goes beyond the bedroom door, high-stakes missions, and a dash of Scottish charm and humour that will keep you turning pages all night long. ??
