Genre Scribes: Friday Fiction Writing Challenge #39 — Prestige

Welcome to #39 of the Friday Fiction Writing Challenge! Here’s a complete list of all the posts so far. Feel free to join in.

I’m going to start this post with a couple of quick announcements/updates for the challenge.

  1. With the COVID-19 outbreak hitting hard, I’m going to have to reduce the challenge to every fortnight (every two weeks). If I can post more than that, I will. Don’t worry, I’m not ill—and touch wood—neither is anyone I know. The reason behind the change is down to picking up extra responsibilities while my husband’s workload increases in the food retail sector to meet the massive increase in demand.
  2. There’s a slight change in the challenge rules. We have a new word count limit: 500-ish words.

And onto the post.

Once again. I decided to challenge myself to continue Amy and Kelvin’s story from where we left them last week. (If you’ve missed any of their story, you can find all their links here.)

This week’s random word is: Prestige

I decided to challenge myself this week. No matter what the word, I was to write another installment of Amy and Kelvin’s story. It wasn’t the easiest word to work with, but I managed to get there in the end.

This snippet picks up right where we left them last week. Again, I went over the word count—I’m going to review the limit in the next couple of weeks. (Here’s a page with all their story links, in order.)

Before getting into the meat of the post, I have to say a huge thank you to my wonderful husband, Jez, for taking the time to create the featured image for this post. 😘

While I’m in the shout out mood, a big thanks to Chris for sharing her response to last week’s prompt. Check out her site, you will be entertained.

Blood oozed from the wound at Kelvin’s side as he pulled himself back over the lip of the cliff. The male-model-looking Consortium operative had impressive knife skills but lacked in the common sense department.

Woohoo! Amy and Kelvin’s story continues in today’s post. (Here’s where we left them last time.) A quick word of warning, as the story grows, as does the word count of each mini-scene/sequence. It’s not too crazy, it sits under 500 words, so it’s still a quick read.

Today’s response features Kelvin and Amy–the aircrash couple. This mini-scene catches up with where we left them in the celebration prompt.

Today’s word didn’t lend itself to any immediate story ideas for previous characters, so I decided to start afresh with the introduction of a new character, Maddie. She feels like a character I’d like to spend some more time with–prompt words willing. 🧐

This week I’m revisiting Amy and Kelvin (the airplane crash couple) from the challenge prompts damage and cookie. The scene takes place a day or two after the cookie one. Confession: I went a wee bit over on the word count by 100-ish words.

The moment I saw the prompt word, last week’s characters popped into my head. This scene comes after they’ve had dinner together.

Deniable Unit 2 Progress Update: Oct 2

Progress Update

I’m now at 12% on my outline for Deniable Unit 2!

Well, it’s been a while since I posted an update on my current work-in-progress (WIP).

I started work on the intentional outline for DU 2, made a ton of notes that made total sense, and then went on holiday. When I got back to work a few weeks ago, those notes made absolutely zero sense.

So, I’ve spent the last three weeks getting back up to speed with the outline, made a lot of changes, and now I’ve got the plot to where it should be.

Now that I’m over that speed bump, I know that my progress is going to pick up speed.

Raring to go for the next step!
