Master NaNoWriMo with this Word Count Tracker Spreadsheet

Ah, November is on the horizon, and that can only mean one thing to writers. It’s time for another National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). NaNoWriMo is an event where writers from around the world buckle down to write a whopping 50,000 words in just 30 days. But, as any NaNo participant knows, keeping track of your word count and maintaining momentum can be challenging.

The Common Challenge:

Many writers dive into NaNoWriMo with gusto but lack a concrete plan or tracking mechanism. I’ve been guilty of this many times. I know how easy it is to lose track of word counts, fall behind, and lose motivation. I’ve ‘won’ NaNo once. Once.

That once was when I tracked every day’s word counts. I did it by hand on a scrap of paper–the scrap that kept disappearing whenever I needed it! But the act of tracking kept me motivated to get the words in each day. Since that time, I’ve been a tracking convert. I decided that if I was ever going to tackle NaNo again, I wanted a tool that not only tracks your progress but also motivates you to reach those word count milestones.

Introducing the “Onward! November Word Count Tracker”:

Disclosure: This post contains links to spreadsheet products in my Etsy shop.

This Google Sheets-based tracker is explicitly designed for NaNoWriMo participants. With features that allow you to log daily word counts, track your progress against daily and challenge targets, and even set milestones with rewards, it’s the companion every writer needs for November.

A Detailed Walkthrough:

Daily Word Count Logging: Input your word count for the day, and the spreadsheet automatically calculates your total, showcasing how close you are to the 50,000-word goal.

Milestones & Rewards: Set milestones at your chosen word counts and assign rewards for when you hit them. This feature not only motivates but also gives you mini-goals to aim for throughout the month.

Difference from Daily Target: No more guesswork! See at a glance if you’re ahead, on track, or need to catch up to meet your daily word count goal.

Why This Word Count Tracker Stands Out:

Beyond its core functionality, this tracker offers an intuitive and visually pleasing design, complete with data bars that fill up as you write more, giving you a visual representation of your progress. Plus, the inclusion of milestones and rewards adds an element of fun and motivation to the daunting task of writing 50,000 words in a month.

Testimonial for the Word Count Tracker:

“It works!” — Jez, Beta Tester (and totally not biased husband).

Wow, wow and wow again! Go for it, Susan.
Just to say that I did it once (almost) about 5 years ago. You know, the ‘1667’ is etched in my brain forever.

1667 is what we’ll all be saying when they admit us to the loony bin! Though I’m not taking part this year–still drowning in edits at the moment.

You are a writing machine. I am tired just looking at the planner. Goals set now go for it 🙂

Thanks, Brian. The numbers in the filled-out sheet are from when I was blasting through the first draft of Running the Asset. I’m not taking part in NaNo this year as I’m still wading through the edits for RtA–but I will steal the encouragement to get on with that!
