Things in Scots: Gies a Scots Phrase Day

According to Scottish Twitter, it’s #GiesAScotsPhraseDay (give us a Scots phrase) today! And, luckily for me, it’s a Things in Scots post day!

As I can’t think of a complete Scots phrase in Running the Asset (off the top of my), other than stick the heid oan, I’ll share this one with you.

Monie a mickle maks a muckle.

Breaking it down

Monie means many.

Mickle means large, but it can also mean small (yip, it can be confusing sometimes!)

Maks means makes.

Muckle means large… see, confusing!

What the phrase means is many wee things add up to something bigger. Some say that it means every little help. I prefer the first version when I’m facing a massive task *cough* editing. (I’ve used this phrase before when talking about productivity… thanks for the reminder, Brian!)

That’s it for this week

I hope this wee switch-up for this week’s instalment was fun for you. If you’d like to see some more Scots phrases, check out the tag on Twitter.

Thanks for reading. Take care, and I hope to see you next week for more Things in Scots on Fiction Friday!
