Things in Scots: Running the Asset Edition – Claes

Swatch

Welcome to another edition of “Things in Scots”! This week’s Scots word is claes. The snippet is from the second half of Running the Asset’s manuscript.

But before we get into the nitty-gritty of this week’s Scots word, let’s set the scene.

Adam and Elle have just been caught in Trevor’s office (Elle’s boss and our bad guy). They’ve managed to talk their way out of it by the skin of their teeth… or have they?

Here’s the snippet… (unedited draft!)

Adam took Elle’s hand and moved down the hall to the stairs, nice and calm, as though they hadn’t just cheated death.

But something gnawed at her insides. It didn’t feel like they’d just cheated death, merely postponed it.

And for what? A stack of invoices for Trevor’s run-of-the-mill events and a hunting knife. Why keep those in the safe? It didn’t make sense.

“Keep moving, doll. We’re not out of this yet. And, I’ve got a feeling Gavan isn’t going to let this go, and I’d rather not get blood on my good claes.”

They made their way through the back hallways, past numerous wait staff, chefs, and maids. All of them, Trevor’s people. All of them, Consortium. All of them capable of killing without a second thought.

Hopefully, the context made it easy to figure out what claes means. If you guessed that claes means clothes in English, you’d be 100% correct! 🤞

So, how did you do? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to hear how easy or difficult you found it to figure out.

That’s it for this week

There you have it! Another fun snippet from Running the Asset and another Scots word. I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I did.

Join me next week for another new Scots word to add to your vocabulary!
